This network of bivouac areas around the Viroin and Hermeton valleys and the vast forests around Chimay and south of the Viroin-valley has been developed in 2014 by the authority of the 'Parc Naturel Viroin-Hermeton' for thru-hikers on the long distance (walking) trail ‘La Traversée de la Grande Forêt du Pays de Chimay’, known and signposted since 2025 also as Grande Randonnée GRP 124 . Today it's being monitored by Tourism 'Pays des Lacs, the National Park 'Entre Sambre et Meuse', forest authorities and 9 municipalities. You can stay up to 16 hrs (1 night) at each bivouac area. Arrival after 4 pm, departure next morning before 10 am, so no occupation or tents between 10 am and 4 pm. Reservation necessary for most bivouac areas.
Bivouac areas should not be confused with small campings, rules are different, comfort facilities limited or non-existent and you are personally responsibility to keep the area spotlessly clean and quiet during your short stay. Campfires are strictly prohibited on all bivouac areas at all times and subject to penalties and removal.  Some locations have a toilet, most don't. No water pumps available. There is often a spring, stream or river nearby but make sure you carry enough drinking water. Any approach by a motorized vehicle is strictly forbidden. These bivouac areas can be busy during holidays and nice weather weekends. Respect nature (you are staying in a national park!), silence and other campers’ rest. Violation of rules in force can be subject to legal prosecution or a penalty. Enjoy your short stay in the Ardennes nature. Leave no trace, just your footsteps.
